Syracuse Sees End of Streak

Rashad Anderson scored 21 points, and Josh Boone had 18 points and 10 rebounds as No. 3 Connecticut ended No. 20 Syracuse’s 12-game winning streak, 88-80, on Monday night in a Big East Conference game at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse (15-3, 3-1) entered the top 25 on Monday for the first time since late November, but Connecticut (15-1, 3-1) took a big early lead and pulled away for their sixth win over the Orange in eight meetings.

Hilton Armstrong had eight of Connecticut’s 16 blocked shots and Marcus Williams, making his second start since returning from an 11-game suspension because of an arrest last summer in the theft of laptops from dorms, had 14 points and 11 assists.

Demetris Nichols led the Orange with a career-high 28 points, all but three in the second half.

It was the first game between Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim since they were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in September. Both have 718 wins.

No. 16 George Washington 88, Stony Brook 60 -- Omar Williams scored 13 points in 16 minutes and the Colonials (13-1) shut down the Seawolves (3-12) for several minutes at the start of each half at Washington. George Washington opened the game with a 13-0 run and Stony Brook went scoreless in the first four minutes of the second half.

OTHER GAMES

Missouri 89, Kansas 86 -- Thomas Gardner scored a career-high 40 points, including two free throws with 1:01 left in overtime that put the Tigers (10-5, 3-1) ahead for good in a stunning Big 12 Conference victory over the Jayhawks (10-6, 1-2) at Columbia, Mo. Missouri trailed by seven points before outscoring Kansas, 10-3, over the last 30 seconds of regulation.

Northern Iowa 71, Southern Illinois 65 -- Ben Jacobson hit a fadeaway bank shot with 33 seconds left to lead the Panthers (16-3, 6-2) to a double-overtime win over the Salukis (13-4, 6-1) in a Missouri Valley Conference game at Cedar Falls, Iowa, to end their 11-game winning streak.
