From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police were investigating the death Thursday of an elderly woman who was struck by a freight train near the intersection of Dewey and Palm avenues just before 1:30 a.m.

The train engineer sounded the train’s horn and applied the brakes but could not stop in time, police said.

Evidence at the scene and inside the victim’s vehicle, which was parked near the tracks, suggested the woman committed suicide, police said. The woman’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
