One More Dayto Get Your Kicks

Why is it that the coach of every major soccer team in the world that lost in the World Cup was fired or resigned and the U.S. coach is still hanging around?

Why don’t they just give each soccer team five penalty kicks, which seem to be pretty exciting, and start the game that way? Then, unless the score were tied, they could do away with all that boring time when they do nothing but kick the ball back and forth.

I can’t take it any longer. Grahame Jones needs to find some other outlet for his sour view of the world. Calling the France-Portugal semifinal “drab and lackluster” shows that he has lost his faculties. Now he needs to lose his keyboard.

The France game was attacking soccer with tremendous passing and dribbling exhibitions and end-to-end play. Germany-Italy had a storybook finish with two last-minute goals, but France’s victory was equally filled with “electricity,” tension” and “quality.” The game was a nail-biter, but Jones was obviously saving his nails for the chalkboard.
