Kline Eliminated in First Round

MacKinzie Kline of Encinitas, Calif., allowed to use a golf cart because of a congenital heart defect, lost a 2-up decision to Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu in the first round of the U.S. Girls’ Junior golf championship at Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday.

“I had a few hiccups that cost me,” Kline said.

“It’s definitely disappointing, but I played as good as I could have.”

Qualifying medalist Mina Harigae of Monterey won two matches to advance to the third round.

Harigae beat Tiffany Dong, 5 and 3, in the first round and Margaret Pentrack, 4 and 3, in one of only five second-round matches completed. Play was suspended because of rain with 11 second-round matches still in progress.

In other completed second-round matches on the Carmel Country Club’s South Course, Jane Rah of Torrance beat Mindy Kim of Diamond Bar, 4 and 2. Isabelle Lendl, the 14-year-old daughter of former tennis star Ivan Lendl, led Kimberly Kim, 3-up, after 13 holes in the second round.

Defending champion Kevin Tway and medalist Arnond Vongvanij won matches to advance to the second round in the U.S. Junior Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club.

Tway, the son of PGA Tour winner Bob Tway, beat Clayton Rotz of Chambersburg, Pa., 2 and 1, and Vongvanij edged the youngest player in the field, 13-year-old David Flynn, 2-up.

Tadd Fujikawa, who played in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, edged Jack Fields in 19 holes. Rickie Fowler, the California state high school champion from Murrieta Valley, beat John Peterson, 4 and 3.
