Peter Vagenas’ goal in the 14th minute gave the Galaxy a 1-1 tie with the Columbus Crew in a Major League Soccer match Saturday.

The Crew grabbed the lead in the ninth minute when Eddie Gaven scored on a header on a cross from Jacob Thomas, the first goal surrendered by the Galaxy in 521 minutes. It was also the Crew’s first lead since June 24.

But Vagenas scored five minutes later when his left-footed shot toward the goal deflected off Crew defender Chris Leitch’s foot and past goalkeeper Bill Gaudette.

The best chance for either team to break the tie came in the 65th minute when a shot by the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan hit the right post.

The Crew (4-9-7), which fell into last place in the Eastern Conference after Wednesday’s loss to New York, is mired in a 10-game winless streak.

The Galaxy (5-10-5) is unbeaten in six games and remains in fifth place in the Western Conference.

Gaudette became the fifth goalkeeper to play for the Crew this season. That tied an MLS record set in 1998 by the Miami Fusion.

The Galaxy had to make two changes from the side that played to a scoreless draw with Chivas USA last weekend. Ugo Ihemlu, returning from a one-match suspension, and Benjamin Benditson replaced suspended defenders Tyrone Marshall and Chris Albright.
