Scottsbluff Tries to Bite the Bullet

Share

Trainer Jeff Mullins won the 10th race Saturday with a shipper from Turf Paradise and he’ll try to do the same this afternoon in the $60,000 Bullet at Hollywood Park.

Mullins, who took the finale with Evanston two days ago, will send out Scottsbluff in the Bullet, a 5 1/2 -furlong race on the turf.

Owned by D.E. Weir, Scottsbluff, a 4-year-old Siberian Summer gelding, has won three of 11 racing primarily in Arizona. But this will be his first start for Mullins.

It also will be his initial race on grass. Victor Espinoza, the meet’s leading rider with the first three weeks nearly complete, will be aboard the California bred, who did run three times at Del Mar last summer when trained by Kevin Lewis. His best finish in those races was a second behind Thor’s Echo in the Real Good Deal on Aug. 12.

In terms of victories, the most accomplished member of the Bullet cast on the Hollywood Park turf course is Slew’s Prince. A 6-year-old son of Slew’s Royalty, the front-runner has won three of five over the layout for owner Benjamin Warren and trainer Cliff Sise Jr.

Race of the day: Miss Bradford Co, who has won four times on the Calder turf course, will try for her second win in a row in the sixth race today. Apprentice Jeffrey Sanchez, who was aboard when she won by a nose as the 9-10 favorite on May 1, will ride again for owner Lindsay Gay and trainer Ralph Ziadie in the $32,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles. Seven other fillies and mares are scheduled to run in a race that begins the track’s late pick four.

One for the road: Clever Miss Trixie arrives sharp from Tampa Bay Downs and can win first off the claim for a hot trainer in the eighth race at Calder. Carlos Oliveros will ride the 6-year-old Clever Trick mare for owner Olympia Stables and trainer Christos Gatis, who won with three of his first four starters at Calder, in the $26,500 optional claimer at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: An early pick four using The Missile Came, Double Parked and Helmsmaster in the first, Practical Cat and Slewp John B in the second, Clever Match and Go Bye Bye in the third and Samurai Master and Li Bien in the fourth.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 4/32. Money: (previous day/meet total): $23/$211.80. Total money bet: $246.
