From Times staff and wire reports

A wildfire was burning Sunday across 125 acres of hillside brush and trees in Riverside County, prompting authorities to order voluntary evacuations for the residents of 100 homes near Lake Elsinore, officials said.

The fire is burning in an area of 300 to 400 homes, according to Capt. Julie Hutchinson, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The blaze broke out Sunday evening and chewed through dense brush and trees covering hills west of Lake Elsinore and north of California 74, she said.

About 180 firefighters were working on the blaze. As of 9:45 p.m., the fire was slowing down because of increased humidity and lower temperatures.

The cause was under investigation.

Lake Elsinore is about 75 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
