Illinois 23, at Michigan State 20: Jason Reda’s 39-yard field goal with six seconds left lifted the Illini (2-3, 1-1) over the Spartans (3-2, 0-1) at East Lansing, Mich., for their first Big Ten win since 2004 to end a 10-game conference losing streak. Pierre Thomas had 110 yards in 18 carries for the Illini, whose last Big Ten win before Saturday was Nov. 6, 2004 -- a 26-22 victory over Indiana. Freshman quarterback Isiah “Juice” Williams sparked the Illini in only his second career start. He ran for 103 yards in 17 carries. He also completed nine of 16 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown.

No. 6 Michigan 28, at Minnesota 14: Chad Henne threw three touchdown passes in the first half, and the Wolverines (5-0, 2-0) held on to defeat the Golden Gophers (2-3, 0-2) at Minneapolis and win back the Little Brown Jug. Henne completed 17 of 24 passes for 284 yards and Mike Hart rushed for 195 yards -- 54 in his final carry. Bryan Cupito threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns to Logan Payne for the Gophers, who defeated Michigan at Ann Arbor last season.

at No. 12 Notre Dame 35, Purdue 21: Brady Quinn threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns, and Darius Walker ran for 146 yards to lead the Fighting Irish (4-1) over the Boilermakers (4-1) at South Bend, Ind. Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter completed 23 of 46 passes for 398 yards. The Irish improved to 4-1 for the second straight season -- the first time they have had one loss or fewer after five games in consecutive seasons since the 1993-94 seasons.

Wisconsin 52, at Indiana 17: John Stocco threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns, and P.J. Hill ran for 129 yards and three scores to lead the Badgers (4-1, 1-1) over the Hoosiers (2-3, 1-1) at Bloomington, Ind. Wisconsin had 390 yards and five touchdowns in seven first-half possessions.

at Penn State 33, Northwestern 7: In a matchup of the oldest and youngest coaches in Division I-A, Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions (3-2, 1-1) rolled over Pat Fitzgerald and the Wildcats (2-3, 0-1) at State College, Pa. Deon Butler set a Penn State record with 216 yards receiving, and Tony Hunt ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns.

ATLANTIC COAST

at No. 18 Clemson 51, Louisiana Tech 0: James Davis ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns to lead three Clemson rushers with over 100 yards as the Tigers (4-1) rolled over the Bulldogs (1-3) at Clemson, S.C. Clemson posted its first shutout in six seasons and is off to its best start in five years. A 64-yard touchdown run by Davis was Clemson’s longest by a tailback since Raymond Priester had a 65-yarder against South Carolina in 1996.

at Wake Forest 34, Liberty 14: Riley Skinner threw for 218 yards and a touchdown, and the Demon Deacons (5-0) defeated the Flames (3-2) at Winston-Salem, N.C. Backup tailback Kevin Harris had touchdown runs of 27 and seven yards and De’Angelo Bryant had a three-yard touchdown run for Wake Forest, which is off to its first 5-0 start since 1987.

at Boston College 22, Maine 0: Andre Callender ran for 76 yards, breaking free for a 25-yard touchdown in the second quarter, to lead the Eagles (4-1) over the Black Bears (2-2). Matt Ryan completed 15 of 26 passes for 182 yards before resting his sore ankle in the last series. The Eagles improved to 4-0 against Division I-AA opponents under Coach Tom O’Brien.

at Miami 14, Houston 13: Javarris James set a freshman school record by rushing for 148 yards, and the Hurricanes (2-2) survived to defeat the Cougars (4-1). Miami avoided its first 1-3 start in 30 years.

Virginia 37, at Duke 0: Jeffrey Fitzgerald returned a fumble 23 yards for a touchdown late in the first half to lead the Cavaliers (2-3, 1-1) over the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-3) at Durham, N.C.

BIG EAST

at Pittsburgh 45, Toledo 3: Quarterback Tyler Palko threw his 13th and 14th touchdown passes this season to lead the Panthers (4-1) over the Rockets (2-3). Palko, who sat out the fourth quarter, completed 12 of 15 passes for 172 yards.

Navy 41, at Connecticut 17: Quarterback Brian Hampton ran for 182 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 141 yards and another score to lead the Midshipmen (4-1) over the Huskies (2-2) at East Hartford. Navy had 605 yards in total offense, including 464 on the ground.

at Syracuse 40, Wyoming 34: Delone Carter scored his fourth touchdown on a 15-yard run in the second overtime to give the Orange (3-2) a victory over the Cowboys (1-4).

at Cincinnati 24, Miami (Ohio) 10: Greg Moore rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown to lead the Bearcats (2-3) over the RedHawks (0-5).

at No. 7 Texas 56, Sam Houston State 3: Henry Melton ran for two touchdowns, Colt McCoy passed for two more and the Longhorns (4-1) routed the Bearkats (2-2) at Austin. Melton, a 270-pound tailback normally used in short-yardage and mop-up situations, got the start and ran for 63 yards. It was Texas’ first game against a Division I-AA opponent since 1992.

at No. 25 Missouri 28, Colorado 13: Chase Daniel threw four touchdown passes to lead the Tigers (5-0, 1-0) over the Buffaloes (0-5, 0-1) at Columbia, Mo. It is Missouri’s first 5-0 start since 1981. Colorado has lost nine in a row, the team’s longest losing streak since a 10-game slide during the 1963 and 1964 seasons. Daniel, a sophomore in his first season as a starter, completed 23 of 35 passes for 253 yards.

Texas Tech 31, at Texas A&M; 27: Graham Harrell threw three touchdown passes to Robert Johnson, including the game-winner with 26 seconds left, and the Red Raiders (4-1, 1-0) defeated the Aggies (4-1, 0-1) at College Station, Texas. Harrell completed 32 of 45 passes for 392 yards, shredding Texas A&M;’s sixth-ranked pass defense for most of the game. The Aggies were giving up 127.5 yards passing a game.

at Iowa State 28, Northern Iowa 27: Bret Meyer passed for 323 yards and two touchdowns, including a 16-yarder to Jon Davis with 1:05 left that gave the Cyclones (3-2) the victory over the Panthers (2-2) at Ames. Iowa State wasn’t assured of winning until Northern Iowa’s Brian Wingert was wide right on a 51-yard field goal attempt with six seconds left.

at Baylor 17, Kansas State 3: Shawn Bell threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns and the Bears (2-3, 1-0) posted consecutive Big 12 victories for the first time after defeating the Wildcats (3-2, 0-1) at Waco, Texas. The last time Baylor won consecutive conference games was 1995 in the last year of the Southwest Conference.

SOUTHEASTERN

at No. 5 Florida 28, Alabama 13: Ryan Smith had two interceptions, Reggie Nelson returned another interception for a touchdown and the Gators (5-0, 3-0) beat the Crimson Tide (3-2, 1-2) at Gainesville, Fla. Florida pressured John Parker Wilson into three turnovers, converted two of them into fourth-quarter touchdowns and turned a one-point game into a comfortable win. Florida overcame a 10-7 halftime deficit to beat Alabama for only the second time in nine tries at home.

at No. 9 Louisiana State 48, Mississippi State 17: JaMarcus Russell threw for a career-best 330 yards and matched a school record with 14 consecutive completions to lead the Tigers (4-1, 1-1) over the Bulldogs (1-4, 0-3) at Baton Rouge, La. Russell threw three touchdown passes and completed 18 of 20 passes.

No. 10 Georgia 14, Mississippi 9: Kregg Lumpkin ran for 101 yards and Matthew Stafford directed two second-half touchdown drives to lead the Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0) over the Rebels (1-4, 0-2) at Oxford, Miss. Fullback Brannan Southerland had two one-yard touchdowns as Georgia improved to 21-2 on the road in five years under Coach Mark Richt.

at No. 15 Tennessee 41, Memphis 7: Erik Ainge threw four touchdown passes to lead the Volunteers (4-1) over the Tigers (1-3) at Memphis, Tenn. Tennessee had its first blowout against Memphis since 2001, and it was the largest margin of victory since a 55-16 win in 1969.

at Kentucky 45, Central Michigan 36: Andre Woodson threw four touchdown passes and Rafael Little scored two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats (3-2) over the Chippewas (2-3) at Lexington.

at Vanderbilt 43, Temple 14: Cassen Jackson-Garrison and Jared Hawkins each ran for two touchdowns to help the Commodores (2-3) rout the Owls (0-5) at Nashville.
