Whilly’s Six-Month Hiatus Is Set to End at Santa Anita

Share

Whilly, a graded-stakes winner over the Santa Anita turf course, will make his first start in more than six months in the $60,000 War Chant today in Arcadia. The race is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $131,845.

Owned by Triple B Farms and trained by Doug O’Neill, the 5-year-old Sri Pekan horse hasn’t been out since finishing 11th of 15 in the $5-million Dubai Duty Free on March 25 in the United Arab Emirates.

A winner eight times in 21 starts, Whilly, who will be ridden by David Cohen in the one-mile War Chant, has won two of five on the local turf. In his most recent Santa Anita race, the Irish bred was third, beaten by one length, by eventual Arlington Million winner The Tin Man in the San Marcos on Jan. 22.

The War Chant, named in honor of the former Breeders’ Cup Mile winner, also attracted Quasimodo, who is unbeaten in three starts on the Santa Anita turf course. A winner in four of nine overall, the 4-year-old A.P. Indy colt is dropping down in class after a pair of graded stakes at Del Mar, where he gave futile chase to Aragorn. Martin Pedroza will ride Quasimodo for Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable LLC and trainer Julio Canani.

Race of the day: Shared Dreams, who has won three of five starts in the U.S., heads a field of eight fillies and mares set to go 1 3/8 miles on turf in the $65,000 North Broadway at Belmont Park. Edgar Prado will ride the 4-year-old Seeking The Gold filly for owners Sarah and Robin Leigh and trainer Christophe Clement. Shared Dreams has a win and a second in two starts over the grass at Belmont.

One for the road: Prince Of Gold should get a contested pace to chase and could be along in time in the third race at Golden Gate Fields. Joey Castro will ride the 4-year-old Afternoon Deelites colt for a partnership and trainer Gloria Haley in the $34,500 optional claimer at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Tug o’War and Hopingandwishing in the first, She’s Noble and Cotorra in the second and Dr. Sinatra in the third.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 2/37. Money: (previous day/meet total): $7.20/$204.40. Total money bet: $174.
