Tynes is twice flawless at end

Lawrence Tynes kicked a 53-yard field goal with six seconds to play, and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Diego Chargers, 30-27.

Tynes made the winning kick moments after his 48-yard field-goal try was wiped out because of a penalty.

“I knew the whistle had blown, but I said, ‘Let me go ahead and take a stab at it and see how the wind’s blowing,’ ” Tynes said of his first kick. “I knew I was going to make the second one.”

Tynes atoned for missing a first-quarter field-goal try and hitting the upright on an extra-point try in the second quarter.

Tynes’ second game-winner in three weeks thwarted a San Diego comeback effort led by LaDainian Tomlinson, who figured in two fourth-quarter touchdown throws, one as the receiver and one as the passer.

The Chargers (4-2) rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the score, 27-27.

The Chiefs (3-3) began the winning drive at their 18-yard line with 33 seconds left.

Damon Huard completed three passes for 52 yards. Tight end Tony Gonzalez had two catches for 37 yards on the drive, capping a six-catch, 138-yard game.

The Chargers tied the score after Luis Castillo recovered a Huard fumble at the Chiefs’ 23, and a pass-interference call against Ty Law gave San Diego a first and goal at the one.

On third down, Tomlinson took a handoff, pulled up short and threw to Brandon Manumaleuna for the score with 5 minutes 10 seconds to go.

It was the ninth touchdown pass of Tomlinson’s career.

Tomlinson finished with 66 yards rushing and 72 yards receiving.

Larry Johnson ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
