Handgun on campus results in 2 expulsions
Two 17-year-old boys were arrested and expelled from a Mission Viejo high school Monday after sheriff’s deputies discovered one of them had brought an unloaded handgun onto campus and passed it to his friend, the school’s principal said.
Sheriff’s deputies received an anonymous call about noon saying that a Laguna Hills boy had brought the gun to Silverado High, a continuation school that can hold as many as 350 students.
When authorities questioned the teen, he said he was carrying the .25-caliber gun for a friend who had brought it to campus, said Jim Amormino, a sheriff’s spokesman.
Deputies then locked down the school until they found the second boy, from Foothill Ranch, who said he had brought the gun to school for protection, Amormino said. Both boys were arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, he said.
“One boy,” Principal Barry Lietz said, “is kind of new to us. The other boy never had any problems at all. It’s kind of a surprise.”
