at San Diego 5, Colorado 4: Mike Piazza homered, Cla Meredith (4-1) extended his scoreless streak to 27 1/3 innings and the Padres pulled within one game of the NL West-leading Dodgers. Meredith pitched two scoreless innings and is one short of San Diego’s club record, set by Mark Davis in 1988. Meredith has not surrendered a run in 24 appearances.

Arizona 4, at Florida 0: Dontrelle Willis (9-11) lost for the first time in four starts, giving up home runs to Carlos Quinten and Damion Easley before leaving in the seventh inning because of cramps. Florida lost for only the third time in 16 games.

Pittsburgh 6, at Chicago 5: Jason Bay homered twice and Jose Bautista scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch by Ryan Dempster as the Pirates moved out of last place in the NL Central and put the Cubs there for the first time this season.

St. Louis 2, at Washington 0: Albert Pujols hit his 44th home run, and Jeff Suppan (11-7) took a shutout into the eighth inning. Pujols’ home run was his fifth in three days.

Atlanta at New York: The game was postponed by rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

Houston at Philadelphia: Rain postponed the game. It was rescheduled for Sept. 25.
