Apparently upset that another man beat him to the last room at a South Los Angeles motel, authorities said a man shot the motel guest in the parking lot early Sunday.

The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. at the Cornett Motel in the 6300 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard, said Los Angeles Police Officer Mike Lopez.

The victim, Gerald Anthony Jones, 33, had driven some companions to the motel and one of them rented a room.

Jones was still in the parking lot when a man, who had been turned away at the desk because the motel was full, called him over. The man then pulled out a blue-steel handgun and fired one shot, fatally hitting Jones in the chest, Lopez said.

The gunman returned to his Ford pickup truck and drove south on Crenshaw Boulevard with a female companion, police said.

The assailant, described as about 30 years old with a heavy build, had not been located as of Sunday night, Lopez said.
