Man convicted of murder in shooting of teenager
An Anaheim man was convicted of first-degree murder Monday in the shooting of two men, one of whom died. Manuel Salas, 27, could face life in prison when sentenced on May 18.
Salas and seven friends were watching the movie “The Sixth Sense” in a Santa Ana apartment on April 1, 2000, when Salas reportedly began crying, went into a bathroom and came out shooting. Robert Ornelas, 16, died at the scene, and Joshua Salas (no relation), also 16, was shot seven times in the chest and stomach but survived.
At the time, Manual Salas had been using methamphetamine for four days straight, authorities said.
He fled to Mexico where he later spent five years in prison for a robbery in which he used the same gun. He was extradited to Orange County in 2005, a district attorney’s spokeswoman said.
