Chicago 3, at Detroit 1: The Tigers, who had the best record in baseball on July 21, were limited to seven singles by Gavin Floyd (1-1) as the White Sox completed a three-game sweep that left Detroit half a game behind Cleveland in the AL Central and half a game ahead of New York in the wild-card race.

at New York 8, Kansas City 5: Hideki Matsui hit his 100th major league home run and Mike Mussina (7-7) won his third straight start for the surging Yankees. Bobby Abreu was three for four with two RBIs and Melky Cabrera also homered for the Yankees, who ended a 5-1 homestand and improved to 18-7 since the All-Star break.

Boston 9, at Seattle 2: Manny Ramirez homered, Josh Beckett (14-5) struck out nine and the Red Sox won for the fourth time in five games. Beckett had lost three of his four decisions since the All-Star break, but he escaped some jams to tie C.C. Sabathia and John Lackey for the AL lead in wins.

Baltimore 11, at Tampa Bay 3: Erik Bedard (12-4) won his career-best eighth consecutive decision, as the Orioles improved to 14-8 since the All-Star break. Miguel Tejada, Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora homered for Baltimore. Bedard gave up three runs in the first three innings but didn’t yield another one until leaving with two out in the seventh.

at Toronto 4, Texas 1: Matt Stairs doubled three times and drove in two runs, and Dustin McGowan (8-5) won his third straight decision as the Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep. Toronto won its eighth consecutive home game and swept a three-game series from the Rangers for the first time since Aug. 3-5, 2000.

at Minnesota 1, Cleveland 0: Scott Baker (6-4) retired 19 of the final 22 Indians batters.

Angels 4, at Oakland 3: The game was decided by one run for the 22nd time in the teams’ last 35 meetings.
