Eight years ago, Ross Fisher was fetching balls for Tiger Woods on the practice range. Now, he has a five-shot lead over the defending champion entering the third round of the Dubai Desert Classic in the United Arab Emirates.

Fisher shot a second consecutive seven-under-par 65 Friday and was at 14-under 130 halfway through the tournament.

Woods struggled with his putting again and finished with a 67. He’s tied with Miguel Angel Jimenez (69) at nine-under 135.

The second round was cut short because of darkness at Emirates Golf Club after a rare Dubai thunderstorm delayed play for more than two hours.

Fisher has a four-stroke lead over Peter Hanson (65) and Graeme McDowell (69).

Jeff Quinney, a PGA Tour rookie after five years on the Nationwide Tour, shot an eight-under 63 to take a three-shot lead at the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Ariz. He is at 13-under 129. Billy Mayfair and Bart Bryant were at 132 after each shot a 66.

Medlock, Narbonne get mixed rulings

The Los Angeles City Section upheld an appeal by the parents of Morghan Medlock and restored more than 60 victories and two City championships won by Harbor City Narbonne during a three-year span from 2003-05.

However, the appeals panel determined that Medlock, now a freshman at USC, was in violation of California Interscholastic Federation Rule 200D, regarding the provision of false and fraudulent information, and victories from the 2005-06 season will remain forfeited, the 2006 section title remains vacated, and the team remains ineligible to participate in this season’s playoffs.

Michael Medlock, Morghan’s father, said he would appeal to the CIF, the state governing body, and has 30 days to do so. However, the section playoffs begin in two weeks, and parents of current players have retained an attorney to seek an injunction that would allow this year’s team to participate.
