Giants’ Lincecum is right on target

Rookie Tim Lincecum struck out a career-high 12 batters over seven innings and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 13-0, Sunday.

Lincecum’s strikeouts were the fourth-highest total by a San Francisco rookie. Steve Kline and Randy Messenger finished the five-hit shutout, the sixth of the year for the Giants.

“We needed it. I feel like I needed it,” said Lincecum, who ended a six-start winless stretch. “It’s just something great for us to feed off.”

Bengie Molina hit a three-run home run, and Ryan Klesko drove in four runs.

Barry Bonds hit a two-run double, his 2,900th hit and 377th double with the Giants, moving him past his godfather, Hall of Fame member Willie Mays, and into sole possession of first place in San Francisco history.

Klesko followed Bonds’ leadoff walk in the fourth inning with a two-run homer and singled in a run behind Bonds in a six-run fifth. Dave Roberts started the big inning with a leadoff triple, then Fred Lewis walked before four straight hits.

Lincecum (3-2) earned his first victory since May 22 against Houston. The hard-throwing right-hander from the University of Washington, the Giants’ top pick at 10th overall in last year’s amateur draft, did not walk a batter.
