Milwaukee 12, at St. Louis 2: Claudio Vargas (9-2) worked eight innings for the first time in four seasons and was backed by a 19-hit attack against the Cardinals. Corey Hart homered, doubled and singled, Kevin Mench matched his career high with four hits and Tony Graffanino had three RBIs. The Brewers won for only the third time in their last 11 road games and took a three-game NL Central lead over the Cubs.

at Arizona 8, Atlanta 7 (11 innings): Tony Clark homered to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning, and the Diamondbacks won their seventh in a row despite squandering a 7-0 fourth-inning lead. Clark’s homer followed a game-winning shot by Eric Byrnes the previous night and pulled Arizona within one game of the rained-out Dodgers.

at Cincinnati 5, Chicago 4: Edwin Encarnacion’s ninth-inning single drove in Norris Hopper from second base to help the Reds improve to 4-1 on their homestand. Encarnacion also homered. The Cubs lost back-to-back games for the second time in less than a week.

Washington 6, at New York 2: The Nationals’ Ryan Church and Austin Kearns homered to back the pitching of former Met Mike Bacsik (4-6), who allowed eight hits over seven innings. The Nationals bunched four doubles for three runs against Jorge Sosa (7-6) in the second inning.

at Philadelphia 8, Pittsburgh 1: Pat Burrell homered and had three RBIs and Jamie Moyer allowed one run in seven innings in the Phillies’ rain-shortened victory. The game was called after a 61-minute delay following the seventh inning. Burrell homered in a six-run third inning.

San Diego 9, at Houston 4: Craig Biggio’s eighth-inning single gave him 3,020 hits, tying him with Rafael Palmeiro for 23rd.

at San Francisco 12, Florida 10: The Giants tied a season high with four home runs.

Dodgers at Colorado, ppd rain: The Rockies had their first rainout at Coors Field since 2004.
