A committee of the City Council voted Monday to triple the fee charged to property owners who fail to clear vegetation from their land, leaving it for the city to remove.

The council’s Public Safety Committee agreed to hike the hazardous vegetation fee from $314 to $982 for those who do not clear brush after receiving three written warnings.

About 130,000 properties are subject to annual inspection during fire season.

The proposed fee hike will be forwarded to another committee and the full council.
