From Times Wire Reports

Jay Williamson shot a three-under-par 67 Saturday to take a one-shot lead over Hunter Mahan after three rounds of the Travelers Championship at Cromwell, Conn.

Williamson, playing on a sponsor’s exemption, bested second-round co-leader David Toms and first-round leader Mahan over the final four holes and is at 11-under 199.

“I wasn’t really looking at the leaderboards,” he said. “I figured if I could just keep making birdies, making good swings, I’ve got 18 holes and we’ll figure it out tomorrow.”

Toms, a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 2001 PGA Championship, has five top-10 finishes this year. But he bogeyed the par-three 16th, and he fell two back after his drive on the 17th found the water.

His 69 was good enough for third place, a stroke behind Mahan, who shot a 67.

First-round leader Cristie Kerr shot a 70 to move into third place at five under.

Leading the Bank of America Championship going into the final round is nothing new for Tom Purtzer. Winning it would be.

Three birdies on his last six holes at Concord, Mass., gave Purtzer a four-under 68 and a three-stroke lead over seven golfers, including first-day leader Tom Watson (72). He is at 10-under 134.

Purtzer led after the second round in the last two tournaments at Nashawtuc Country Club but couldn’t hang on.
