Championship Saturday / The City and Southern Section crowned 41 team champions this weekend in basketball and soccer. Here’s a look at some of the top story lines from Saturday’s play:

The Upland girls’ soccer team dominated the Southern Section Division I championship game Saturday at Downey Warren High, much the same way it had dominated most of its games the last two seasons.

Only this time, the Highlanders lost -- something that hadn’t happened in their previous 60 games.

Second-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei got an early goal from Lindsey Brown, then held on for a 1-0 victory, ending top-seeded Upland’s unbeaten streak at 60 games.

“I was hoping it would be one more,” Upland Coach Kerri Fahres said. “But sometimes the soccer gods don’t smile on you. That’s just how soccer is.”

Upland was 54-0-6 over the last two seasons before Saturday’s final and had outscored opponents, 106-9, this season.

The Highlanders outshot Mater Dei, 16-4, in the final and allowed Mater Dei to cross midfield only once in the second half.

“They dominated the game,” said Mater Dei goalie Derian Vercillo, who had 10 saves. “There wasn’t one moment when I wasn’t anxious out there.”

Winning seven consecutive City Section championships was nice, but the Woodland Hills El Camino Real girls’ soccer team has larger aspirations.

“I want us to compete with the best teams in the state,” said Eric Choi, the Conquistadores’ first-year coach. The Southern Section Council is considering a Southern California regional masters-type tournament in soccer in 2008, and Choi said he would like to be able to make a case for El Camino Real (20-2-4) to compete in it.

Apparently, Kevin Klasila is a young man of many talents, and all of them have been on display in the last week.

Klasila, a senior goalkeeper, played the piano and sang Friday in a Loyola High talent show. Saturday he had nine saves in a 1-1 tie with Santa Margarita for a Division I co-championship.

Afterward, he was scheduled to catch a 10 p.m. flight to Florida, where he was to join the U.S. under-18 national team. “I feel like I’m on the stage, that I’m right where I want to be right now,” he said.

La Habra performed even better in futbol than it did in football.

The Highlanders (28-5-1), who have five football players on the soccer team, defeated Santa Ana Saddleback, 2-1, to win the Division III title, their first in boys’ soccer.

Junior goalkeeper Kyle Fowler, a linebacker and kicker on the football team, helped La Habra finish 10-3 and advance to the Southeast Division semifinals last fall. He had nine saves Saturday.

A five-goal second half gave Los Angeles Salesian the scoring record for a Southern Section boys’ soccer final in its 6-1 victory over Pasadena Marshall in the Division V final a Downey High.

The previous record of five was shared by six teams, most recently Saddleback in a 5-0 victory over La Habra in 2005. The five-goal margin matches Saddleback.
