This win has a familiar ring for Georgetown

In the heart of Atlantic Coast Conference country, Georgetown and Boston College got together for some old-fashioned, bruising Big East-style basketball.

With 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert and Jeff Green clogging the middle, the Hoyas defeated the Eagles, a former conference rival, 62-55, Saturday in the East Regional at Winston-Salem, N.C.

With most of the North Carolina crowd rooting for the Eagles, who bolted the Big East for the ACC two years ago, the Hoyas pulled away late by dominating the inside.

Hibbert scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and had 12 rebounds, and leading scorer Green overcame a poor shooting game to convert two three-point plays in the final two minutes as the Hoyas (28-6) advanced to the round of 16 for the second year in a row.

The second-seeded Hoyas, who had missed the tournament for four consecutive years until last season, will play Vanderbilt on Friday at East Rutherford, N.J.

Tyrese Rice scored 22 points and Jared Dudley had 19 points for the seventh-seeded Eagles (21-12), who blew an eight-point, second-half lead and were eliminated from the NCAA tournament by a Big East school for the second year in a row.

Boston College led by four at halftime and extended the lead to 39-31 early in the second half.

But the undersized Eagles started to wear down as it became apparent they missed 6-foot-10 center Sean Williams, who was kicked off the team in January. The Eagles, who frustrated the Hoyas early with their zone, couldn’t prevent Hibbert and Green from getting free late.

Hibbert’s two free throws completed a 10-0 run. After Rice made a three-pointer and two free throws to get the Eagles to within one, Jessie Sapp made a layup and Green’s three-point play with 1:26 left put Georgetown ahead, 59-53.

North Carolina 81, Michigan State 67 -- Reyshawn Terry made several key baskets down the stretch to help the top-seeded Tar Heels (30-6) hold off the ninth-seeded Spartans (23-12) at Winston-Salem.

North Carolina advanced to the round of 16 for the second time in three seasons, and will play the winner of today’s USC-Texas game next week in East Rutherford.

Terry scored 12 of his 14 points in the final seven minutes for the Tar Heels, who continued their NCAA success in their home state. They improved to 21-1 in in-state tournament games -- 6-0 at the home of conference rival Wake Forest.
