Thomas craves playoffs

The playoffs are Tim Thomas’ favorite time, and he hopes to help the Clippers extend their season.

While with the Phoenix Suns last season, Thomas averaged 14.7 points (he made 37.8% of his three-point shots) and 6.1 rebounds as Phoenix defeated the Clippers in seven games in the Western Conference semifinals.

In Game 6 of a first-round series against the Lakers, Thomas made a three-pointer with 6.3 seconds left that sent it into overtime. The Suns won at Staples Center and routed the Lakers in Game 7 at Phoenix.

“I’ve just been the type of player who loves the pressure,” Thomas said before scoring 12 points Sunday in the Clippers’ 101-95 loss at New Jersey.

“I’m just the type of player who can perform in those circumstances. I like to be in those situations.”

In the regular season, Thomas has career averages of 11.8 points and 4.1 rebounds. He has shot 43.9% from the field and 36.9% on three-pointers.

In the postseason, his averages increase to 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds. His shooting averages are also higher at 47.2% and 43.9%, respectively.

In the Suns’ run to the 2005-06 conference finals, Thomas averaged 15.1 points and 6.3 rebounds, shot 49.1% from the field and 44.4% from beyond the arc. His ability to stretch the defense made things difficult for the Clippers and Lakers in the playoffs.

“As far as stretching the defense, it’s always a plus to have someone who can,” Thomas said. “In the playoffs, you’re going to have times when your offense is a little slow or a little stagnant in the half-court set.... You have to be able to go outside and knock down some shots. I look at it as a plus.”

Quinton Ross, whose face collided with Vince Carter’s elbow, left after suffering a concussion with 8 minutes 33 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and did not return. He is listed as day to day.

“I’m fine,” Ross said.
