Different views of an old beauty

I am a 61-year-old attorney, have subscribed to The Times my entire adult life (my parents did prior to that) and have never felt compelled to write a letter to the editor. However, I feel duty-bound to address what I consider to be a grave injustice to my friends at the Hotel Bel-Air [“A Date With a Grande Dame,” Oct. 24]. While I have disagreed with some of your editorials, food reviews, etc., from time to time, it appeared that Ms. Brenner went out of her way to slam almost every aspect of the restaurant (save the bar, Antonio Castilla de la Gala and the sommelier).

The hotel is unquestionably one of the most beautiful in Southern California, and the restaurant has always been one of Los Angeles’ hidden pleasures for both its beautiful setting and its food.

Her impression runs so counter to that of my family and that of the Zagat guide, the Wine Spectator and Relais & Chateaux, it felt as if she was reviewing a different venue altogether.

It is unfortunate that someone with a bully pulpit can cause so much harm to such an undeserving target.

Iwas shocked to awaken Wednesday to Ms. Brenner’s review of the Hotel Bel-Air Restaurant. I have been a loyal customer for many years. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, for a normal or special celebration, the wait staff has been extremely professional and expert at their craft.

The food has always been fresh, cooked to perfection and served on a timely basis. The wine service has been expert. And what ambience! That is why I was so taken aback by Ms. Brenner’s review.

When I mentioned to friends that I thought the Bel-Air was mediocre from all standpoints except decor, I got the feeling they thought my wife and I were just being snooty. The last two times we ate there, which will be the last, we got the same standard of food and service that you experienced. Thanks for exposing the truth about a once great restaurant. We’re not going back to Bel-Air until I read a column from you saying that it is safe to return.
