Hawaii doesn’t always cover

Times Staff Writer

After being sidelined because of a concussion, Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has been cleared to play in tonight’s game at Nevada and that’s good news for the undefeated Warriors, who lead the nation in scoring (50.2 points per game) and total offense (549.6 yards per game).

But Hawaii (9-0), a seven-point favorite, is far from a lock against the Wolf Pack (5-4), which has won three games in a row and is 5-1 against the spread in its last six games as a home underdog.

Despite their success, the Warriors have struggled in their role as a favorite, which they have been in all seven odds-listed games this season. Hawaii has failed to cover in three of its last four games and is 3-4 against the spread this season.

Central Michigan (6-4) is a 13-point home favorite tonight over Eastern Michigan (3-8) and the Chippewas have several positive trends going their way.

They are 12-0-1 against the spread in their last 13 home games, 10-1-1 against the spread in their last 12 games against a team with a losing record and 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 games as a home favorite.

The over/under, listed at 67, could also be a hot play tonight. The over is 7-1-1 in nine posted games for Central Michigan this season and 5-0 in the Chippewas’ last five games.

For only the second time since 2003, the Cleveland Browns will be road favorites for a regular season game when they play at Baltimore on Sunday.

The Browns, 7-2 against the spread this season, are listed as three-point favorites over the Ravens, who are 1-8 against the spread this season.

Bettors seem to like Cleveland, which had 75.06% of the action against the spread as of Thursday, according to wagerline.com.

The Boston Bruins have gotten off to a decent start this season, with an 8-7-1 record over their first 16 games.

For bettors, the combination of Boston’s lack of scoring punch (a league-worst 36 goals scored) and solid defense (37 goals allowed) has provided good money on the over/under line.

The under is 13-3 in 16 games featuring the Bruins.
