Bettors keep putting cash on Patriots

At this stage of the NFL season, oddsmakers almost have to deal with two separate leagues when it comes to creating point spreads.

Games that include the undefeated New England Patriots, and games that do not. Yes, the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady-Randy Moss combination has been that dominant.

In the Patriots’ first 10 games, 65% of the total money bet on their games has been on them compared with 35% for their opponents, according to Bodoglife.com.

“We’ve never considered not offering a line on the Patriots as upsets do happen,” said Richard Gardner, Bodog Sportsbook manager. “I can assure you we hope for an upset every week.”

Most boards had New England (10-0) as a 22-point favorite over Philadelphia (5-5) early in the week, but with Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb ruled out for today’s game at Foxborough, Mass., because of injury, the line grew to 24 by Saturday afternoon.

However, the added points did not seem to have an effect on bettors, who still threw strong support behind the Patriots.

On to TheSpread.com’s betting trend, New England picked up 67% of the bets against the spread this week, and LasVegasInsider.com had the Patriots attracting 85%.

“The lines for the Pats keep getting higher and higher,” Gardner said. “It’s not so much that the bookmakers don’t think the Pats can cover lines over 20 -- as they’ve proven all season that they can -- the bookmakers are trying to set the line so high that it will scare off a lot of bettors.”

The highly anticipated Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Ricky Hatton welterweight title fight may still be two weeks away, but betting money already shows Hatton with heavy support.

Mayweather is listed as a favorite, anywhere from -240 to -285, but according to various betting trends, Hatton (43-0 with 31 knockouts) is at +200 to +220 and has been a solid early bet with much of the action coming from his native England, where he is a national hero.

The over/under rounds line is at 11.5 rounds with the over at -300.
