An East Los Angeles man died Monday after being set on fire outside a store in the City Terrace area east of downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

Marciel Chavez, 52, was set ablaze about 6:20 p.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue, between Indiana Street and Eastern Avenue.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Ed Hummel said the unexplained attack occurred as the man was standing on the sidewalk in front of what a fire dispatcher described as a pet store.

Chavez was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:52 a.m. Monday.

Although there were media reports that the attacker may have been a gang member known to the victim, Hummel said there was no immediate information available about who might have killed Chavez or if he knew his assailant.
