* No. 19 Virginia 18, at Maryland 17: Reserve running back Mikell Simpson capped an amazing all-around performance by scoring the winning touchdown with 16 seconds left, and the Cavaliers (7-1, 4-0) beat the Terrapins (4-3, 1-2) at College Park. Simpson ran 16 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns and also caught 13 passes for 152 yards. The sophomore, who was listed third on the depth chart, had only two carries and four catches before Saturday.

* Miami 37, at Florida State 29: Colin McCarthy returned a fumble 27 yards for his team’s second touchdown in 11 seconds late in the fourth quarter and the Hurricanes (5-3, 2-2) beat the Seminoles (4-3, 1-3) at Tallahassee. It was the first time since 1977 that this rivalry game was played with neither team ranked.

* at Clemson 70, Central Michigan 14: Cullen Harper matched a school record with five touchdown passes and the Tigers (5-2) rolled to their highest point total in 26 years in a rout over the Chippewas (4-4) at Clemson, S.C. Clemson’s 656 total yards were its most since collecting 756 yards in an 82-24 win over Wake Forest in its national title season of 1981.

* at Georgia Tech 34, Army 10: Rashaun Grant ran for 119 yards and a touchdown in place of injured star Tashard Choice and the Yellow Jackets (5-3) beat the Black Knights (3-5) at Atlanta. Choice hurt his right knee on a seven-yard run in the first quarter. The senior, in obvious pain, was helped off the field and then wheeled to the locker room. He did not return to the sideline.

* Wake Forest 44, at Navy 24: Riley Skinner passed for 213 yards and threw two touchdowns to Kenny Moore, who caught 15 passes for 181 yards to lead the Demon Deacons (5-2) over the Midshipmen (4-3) at Annapolis, Md.
