Latin Grammys head to Texas

Share

Houston, you’ve got the Latin Grammys.

The ninth annual edition of the international music awards show moves to Texas for the first time after alternating between East and West coasts since its debut in Los Angeles in 2000. The ceremony showcasing music from across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world will be broadcast live on Nov. 13 from Houston’s Toyota Center, home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets with a capacity of 19,000. Nominations will be announced Sept. 10.

But why Houston? It’s the fourth largest city in the U.S. with one of the largest Latino populations, but it lacks the show business clout of previous host cities -- New York, Miami, L.A. and Las Vegas.

“We cannot just concentrate wherever the Latin stars are,” Gabriel Abaroa, president of the Latin Recording Academy, said Tuesday after a press conference in Houston. “We need to go where the communities are, where the people listen and dance to Latin music.”

The show will be broadcast nationally on the Univision Television Network and will be seen in more than 100 countries.
