Fullerton rolls with 93-83 win over Irvine

Josh Akognon scored 22 points and Frank Robinson had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead host Cal State Fullerton to a 93-83 victory over UC Irvine on Friday night.

Marcus Crenshaw had 16 points off the bench for the Titans (8-4, 1-0 Big West), who shot a season-best 61.5% and have won four of their last six games.

Patrick Sanders scored a career-high 27 points for the Anteaters (5-9, 0-1), who have lost four of five. Darren Fells had 16 points and eight rebounds and Brett Lauer had 12 points.

Irvine, which trailed by 10 points early in the first half, forced a 52-52 tie with 15:49 to play. But Robinson and Scott Cutley each scored four points during a 10-0 surge that put Fullerton ahead 62-52 with 13:08 left.

Marcus McIntosh made two free throws and Lauer made a three-point basket to narrow the Anteaters’ deficit to 62-57. But Crenshaw scored five points on jump shots in a span of 1:21 to extend the Titans’ lead to 67-57 with 9:36 left.

UC Davis 58, UC Riverside 54 -- Vince Oliver’s 16 points and four rebounds gave the host Aggies their first-ever Big West Conference victory.

Shane Hanson had 12 points and two blocked shots, and Mark Payne had six points, six rebounds and four assists for UC Davis (7-7, 1-0).

Sean Cunningham had 22 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Highlanders (3-10, 0-2).

The Aggies were ahead, 47-37, in the second half before the Highlanders came back to cut the lead to 53-52 on a layup by Cunningham at the 1:29 mark. When the Highlanders missed shots and committed turnovers, the Aggies finished with a basket by Ryan Silva and two free throws by Nathan Clark with 19.3 seconds left.
