In Paperback Writers, Richard Rayner remembers Joseph Mitchell, who would have been 100 this year. Mitchell is best known for “Joe Gould’s Secret,” but as Rayner notes, many consider him “the finest nonfiction writer ever to grace the pages of the New Yorker” -- which is saying something indeed.
