Former UCLA star lineman Ogden to retire from Ravens

Former UCLA standout Jonathan Ogden will announce his retirement today, ending a stellar career with the Baltimore Ravens in which the left offensive tackle earned 11 Pro Bowl invitations and a Super Bowl ring.

Ogden, who turns 34 next month, has been bothered by an hyperextended toe since December 2006.

“I’m all right. I’m good with it,” Ogden said of his retirement before meeting with team officials in Owings Mills, Md.

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, 26, reportedly signed a six-year, $70-million contract extension that will make him one of the NFL’s highest-paid defensive players.

Wide receiver Plaxico Burress reported to the New York Giants’ mandatory minicamp but refused to work out until the Super Bowl champions give him a new contract. Burress, 30, has three years left on a six-year, $25-million deal.

Center LeCharles Bentley, 28, asked for and received his release from the Cleveland Browns, nearly two years after suffering a major knee injury. . . . Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters will be fined by the Buffalo Bills for missing the start of a three-day mandatory minicamp, with teammates saying it might be because of a contract dispute. . . . Coach Mike Holmgren returned to the Seattle Seahawks’ practice field after skipping two days with “a minor medical issue.”

Ex-King Norstrom retires after 14 years

Dallas Stars defenseman Mattias Norstrom retired, ending a 14-year career that included stops with the Kings and New York Rangers.

Norstrom, 36, had 18 goals and 147 assists in 903 games.

Vancouver Canucks forward Trevor Linden retired, 20 years to the day after the team drafted him. He also played for three other teams.

Linden, 38, played 1,140 of his 1,382 games, and recorded 733 of his 867 career points, with the Canucks.

The San Jose Sharks hired former Detroit Red Wings assistant Todd McLellan as their coach to replace the fired Ron Wilson.

The Ducks re-signed backup goaltender Jonas Hiller to a two-year, $2.6-millon contract.

Hiller, 26, went 10-7-1 with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage in 23 games behind Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Center Andrew Ebbett, who had 72 points, including 18 goals, for Portland, Maine, was also re-signed to a two-year contract.

Federer extends grass-court streak

Top-seeded Roger Federer shook off his lopsided French Open final loss, extending his grass-court streak to 55 matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michael Berrer at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany.

Second-seeded James Blake rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker, but defending champion Tomas Berdych lost, 6-2, 7-5, to Robin Soderling.

French Open champion Rafael Nadal had little trouble adjusting to grass, beating Jonas Bjorkman, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the third round at Queen’s Club in London.

Andy Roddick, seeking his fifth Queen’s title in six years, showed no signs of the bad shoulder that kept him out of the French Open, defeating Robby Ginepri, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-1.

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko rallied past Jiri Vanek, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals of the Warsaw Open.. . . . Top-seeded Marion Bartoli lost, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, to Petra Cetkovska in the DFS Classic at Birmingham, England, and may skip Wimbledon because of a wrist injury.

NASCAR chairman denies bias complaints

NASCAR chairman Brian France denied that a former of technical inspector complained to her supervisors about racial and sexual discrimination, claims she alleged led to her eventual firing.

Mauricia Grant filed a $225 million suit against NASCAR on Tuesday.

Striker Jozy Altidore, 18, signed a six-year contract with Spanish league team Villarreal, which agreed to pay a transfer fee reportedly close to $10 million for the former New York Red Bull -- nearly twice as much as the previous record for an American player.

Former world boxing champion James Toney was released from active suspension by the California State Athletic Commission, solidifying his rematch July 16 against heavyweight Hasim Rahman at the Pechanga resort in Temecula.

Toney was suspended for a year after testing positive for steroids following his split-decision victory May 24, 2007 against journeyman Dan Batchelder in San Jose.

Toney fought Rahman to a draw in March 2006.
