Pepperdine trounced in Sutton’s home finale

San Francisco interim Coach Eddie Sutton earned an 88-63 victory Monday night over Pepperdine in his final game at Memorial Gym.

Vince Polakovic scored a career-high 24 points and Danny Cavic had 17 points for the Dons, who made eight of their first 13 shots and led, 51-32, at halftime after shooting 53.3% to the 41.4% for the Waves.

The Dons, 9-20 overall and 5-9 in the West Coast Conference, earned the fifth seeding and will open against eight-seeded Loyola Marymount on Friday in the conference tournament, while the sixth-seeded Waves (10-20, 4-10) will face seventh-seeded Portland.

Sutton became interim coach Dec. 26 when Jessie Evans took what Athletic Director Debra Gore-Mann called a leave of absence, though he is not expected to return.

Tyrone Shelley scored 28 points for Pepperdine, which also has an interim coach in Eric Bridgeland after Vance Walberg resigned Jan. 18 for personal reasons.

San Diego 86, Loyola Marymount 65 -- The Lions (5-25, 2-12) allowed the Toreros (18-13, 11-3) to shoot 56.7% in finishing last in the conference for the fifth time in 12 seasons.

Brandon Johnson scored 25 points for San Diego, which saw its 15-point halftime lead cut to 61-57 with 7:47 left before regaining control with a 14-0 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes.

Orlando Johnson scored 19 points for Loyola Marymount.
