Arkansas surprises No. 4 Tennessee, 92-91

Tennessee came up short of a Southeastern Conference double, and the Volunteers may have to do without a top seeding in the NCAA tournament.

Steven Hill made a turnaround jump shot with 5.3 seconds remaining for his only points of the game and Arkansas upset fourth-ranked Tennessee, 92-91, Saturday night at Atlanta in the semifinals of the SEC tournament.

The Razorbacks (22-10), who surely locked up an NCAA bid, advanced to face Georgia in today’s title game. Tennessee (29-4) won its first regular-season title in 41 years but couldn’t pull off a double in the storm-plagued tournament.

The game was played in front of an estimated 2,000 at Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum, where the final two days of the tournament were moved after a tornado damaged the Georgia Dome on Friday night.

Atlantic Coast

Tyler Hansbrough made a 15-foot, fadeaway jump shot off an offensive rebound with 0.8 of a second left to help No. 1 North Carolina defeat Virginia Tech, 68-66, in the ACC tournament semifinals at Charlotte, N.C. Hansbrough finished with 26 points for the Tar Heels (31-2), who came from behind to beat the Hokies (19-13).

Clemson upset No. 7 Duke, 78-74, to reach the title game for the first time in 46 years. The Tigers (24-8) had lost 22 in a row to the Blue Devils (27-5).

Big Ten

No. 8 Wisconsin held off foul-challenged Michigan State, 65-63, at Indianapolis to earn a spot in the Big Ten title game. It’s the second year in a row the Badgers (28-4) will play for the tournament title, and the fourth time in five years.

Drew Neitzel led all scorers with 26, but it wasn’t enough for the No. 19 Spartans (25-8), who were whistled for 30 fouls and had four players foul out.

Wisconsin will play Illinois, which beat Minnesota, 54-50. The Illini (16-18) have won a season-high four in a row.

Big 12

Sixth-ranked Texas, the only team in the country with three wins over teams currently ranked in the top five, will be out to make it four today at Kansas City, Mo.

The Longhorns (28-5) will play fifth-ranked and two-time defending champion Kansas (29-3) for the Big 12 title. Texas advanced by beating Oklahoma, 77-49. The Jayhawks beat Texas A&M;, 77-71.

Big East

Pittsburgh (26-9) won its second Big East tournament championship in its eighth title-game appearance with a 74-65 victory over ninth-ranked Georgetown (27-5) at Madison Square Garden.

Conference USA

Second-ranked Memphis (33-1) won a third consecutive Conference USA tournament championship by routing Tulsa, 77-51, at Memphis, Tenn.

Atlantic 10

Temple (21-12) earned its first NCAA tournament bid since 2001 with a 69-64 win over St. Joseph’s (21-12) in the final of the conference tournament at Atlantic City, N.J.

Western Athletic

Boise State (25-8) ended a 14-year NCAA drought, outlasting New Mexico State, 107-102, for the tournament title in triple overtime at Las Cruces, N.M.
