* No. 1 Kansas 85, No. 16 Portland State 61: Brandon Rush scored 18 points and the Jayhawks (32-3) romped past the Vikings (23-10), who were making their first NCAA tournament appearance. No 16th-seeded team has ever beaten a No. 1 and Portland State never had a chance. The Vikings’ predicament was epitomized by their best player, 5-foot-6 Jeremiah Dominguez. He was smothered by Kansas’ bigger guards and had trouble even getting a look at the basket. He was overmatched at the defensive end as well, at one point finding himself matched against Rush, who’s a foot taller and 55 pounds heavier. Dominguez did lead the Portland State with 13 points and Alex Tiefenthaler had 10. The Vikings shot only 38% from the field and turned it over 16 times.

* No. 8 Nevada Las Vegas 71, No. 9 Kent State 58: Joe Darger scored 18 points, Wink Adams had 17 and the Rebels (27-7) tied an NCAA tournament record by holding the Flashes (28-7) to only 10 points in the first half. The Mid-American Conference champions averaged a turnover a minute the better part of the first half, went almost eight minutes without a point and trailed, 31-10, at halftime. And that was with the Rebels shooting under 40% and committing nine turnovers of their own. The 10 points in the first half were the fewest since Wake Forest scored that many against Butler in 2001. Kent State played evenly with UNLV in the second half, committing only three of its 20 turnovers, but by then it was too late. After winning 11 of its previous 12 games, its tournament was over in a flash.
