at New Mexico State 79, UC Riverside 52: Troy Gillenwater anchored the Aggies with 17 points at Las Cruces, N.M., in the season opener for both teams. The Aggies scored 30 points off turnovers. They forced 20 turnovers and finished with 22 defensive rebounds, nine steals and three blocks. Jesse LoBue and Javon Borum each had 11 points for the Highlanders. LoBue led Riverside’s initial attacks, making his all three of his first-half shots. However, he didn’t score another point until there were less than three minutes to play. The Highlanders were held scoreless through the first seven minutes of the second half until Brandon Dowdy made a three-point basket.

at Iowa State 67, Loyola Marymount 55: Craig Brackins scored 21 points to lead the Cyclones in a World Vision Classic game at Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones (2-0) outscored the Lions, 27-7, during a stretch in the second half. Vernon Teel had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Loyola Marymount (0-2), which cut the deficit to 33-31 early in the second half. But Brackins answered with a three-point basket and an alley-oop dunk to highlight a 12-4 run that pushed the Cyclones ahead, 47-35. Jarred DuBois made a three-point basket to get the Lions to within nine points, but Iowa State scored the next 13 points to pull ahead, 60-38. Corey Counts had 15 points for Loyola Marymount and Wes Eikmeier had 15 points for the Cyclones.

WOMEN

Charlotte 62, USC 60: Ashley Corral scored 15 points and Camille LeNoir had 13, but it wasn’t enough for the Trojans in a game of the Wolfpack Classic at Raleigh, N.C. Sophomore Shannon McCallum had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Charlotte, the first double-double of her career. USC went on a 10-2 run to take 50-40 lead with 11 minutes 46 seconds to play, but the 49ers went on a 10-0 run over the next five minutes, tying the score, 50-50. Charlotte led, 61-56, but USC cut it to 61-60 with 43 seconds left on a layup by Kari LaPlante, who finished with five points. It was the season opener for both teams.
