Akognon sparks Fullerton

Josh Akognon scored 41 points and Cal State Fullerton defeated Hawaii, 90-76, Sunday at the Verizon Wireless Tip-Off Classic in Honolulu.

Akognon, a senior guard, made 12 of his 29 shots, including seven of 18 from three-point range. He also made 10 of 11 free throws. It was the second-highest individual total by a Fullerton player in the program’s history. He had 20 points in the first half.

Jacques Streeter had 15 points and nine assists and Gerard Anderson had 10 points for the Titans (1-1).

Roderick Flemings led the Rainbow Warriors (0-2) with 21 points.

Arkansas Little Rock 66, Pepperdine 65: Keion Bell scored a game-high 17 points but the Waves fell at Malibu.

Pepperdine (1-1) called a timeout with 16.7 seconds to play to set up a final shot, but Jonathan Dupre missed a jump shot off a rebound with five seconds left.

The Waves trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half and pulled to within the final score when Bell made two free throws with 19 seconds to play.

Bell’s layup had cut Pepperdine’s deficit to 65-63 on the Waves’ previous possession.

Dane Suttle made four three-point baskets in the second half to finish with 12 points for the Waves.

Matt Mouzy had 13 of his 16 points in the first half for Arkansas Little Rock (2-0).

No. 25 Wisconsin 68, Long Beach State 61: Senior forward Marcus Landry made a three-point shot with 29.9 seconds left to give the Badgers a four-point lead, then swatted Maurice Clady’s layup attempt to keep the 49ers at bay.

“We didn’t have an answer for Landry,” Long Beach State Coach Dan Monson said. “Winners makes plays like he did.” Wisconsin led by nine points midway through the second half, but Donovan Morris scored on five consecutive possessions to help Long Beach State (0-2) tie it at 57-57. Then Landry took over.

UC Davis 64, Loyola Marymount 55: Joe Harden had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Aggies (1-2) in a World Vision Classic game at Ames, Iowa.

Vernon Teel had 23 points and six rebounds for the Lions (0-3).

The Aggies took a 28-14 lead when Dominic Calegari made two three-point baskets and Kyle Brucculeri made a basket.

WOMEN

UCLA 78, Cal State Fullerton 62: Moniquee Alexander led a balanced attack with a career-best 12 points and the host Bruins won their first game under new Coach Nikki Caldwell.

Fullerton made its first four shots and first three free throws to take a 13-4 lead with 16:10 to play in the first half. But Candice Brown’s free throw with 28 seconds before halftime put the Bruins in front, 35-34.

It was all UCLA in the second half, with the Bruins shooting 51.9% from the field to Fullerton’s 32.4%. Senior center Chinyere Ibekwe had a career-high 14 rebounds for UCLA, and senior guard Tierra Henderson had 10 points and eight rebounds. Toni Thomas led the Titans (1-1) with 12 points.

USC 77, Wisconsin Milwaukee 65: Camille LeNoir scored 15 points to lead four Trojans in double figures in a consolation game of the Wolfpack Classic at Raleigh, N.C. Briana Gilbreath scored 14 points, Heather Oliver had 11 and Ashley Corral had 10 for the Trojans (1-1). Aarika Hughes had a game-high 13 rebounds. Traci Edwards’ 20 points led Milwaukee (0-2).
