Minnesota 12-12, at Baltimore 2-6: Justin Morneau and Carlos Gomez drove in two runs each during a six-run first inning and the Twins moved into a first-place tie in the AL Central by completing a doubleheader sweep of the Orioles. Gomez had a career-high four RBIs and Denard Span homered twice and drove in four runs in the opener.

Toronto 8-5, at Boston 1-7: Jacoby Ellsbury drove in the go-ahead run on a 30-foot single when pitcher Scott Downs fell going after the ball and the Red Sox rallied to split their doubleheader. The Blue Jays wasted a chance to improve their longshot playoff bid. They lost for only the third time in 15 games and fell 7 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL wild-card race. In the opener, late-season call-up Travis Snider homered, doubled and drove in five runs and A.J. Burnett (18-10), pitching on three days’ rest, held Boston to one unearned run and three singles in six-plus innings.

Tampa Bay 7-5, at New York 1-6: Xavier Nady hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and the Yankees rallied to salvage a split of the day-night doubleheader. James Shields got the AL East-leading Rays off to a fast start in the opener, tossing eight shutout innings. The Rays’ franchise has never won a doubleheader in 13 tries. Derek Jeter collected three hits in each game and Wilson Betemit hit a solo homer in the nightcap for New York, which opened its final homestand at Yankee Stadium.

Kansas City 8-8, at Cleveland 3-4: Mark Teahen hit two home runs in the second game to lead the Royals to a sweep over the Indians. Ryan Shealy homered and had a career-high four hits in the nightcap after Teahen had three hits in the first game. Teahen went five for nine with four RBIs in the sweep to improve his career average against Cleveland to .323 with six homers and 26 RBIs.

at Oakland 7, Texas 1: Jack Cust homered and Bobby Crosby hit a three-run double, helping Josh Outman earn his first major league victory. Outman (1-0) gave up one run and four hits over five innings in his first big league start.

Detroit at Chicago, (2) ppd., rain: The White Sox were rained out for the third time in a week. They’ll try to play a doubleheader today, but the remnants of Hurricane Ike are supposed to reach the Upper Midwest by then.

at Angels 5, Seattle 2: Francisco Rodriguez picked up his record 58th save after Juan Rivera went four for four with three doubles and a home run.
