No. 17 Penn State 55, at Syracuse 13: Jordan Norwood and Deon Butler each caught two touchdown passes in the first half and the Nittany Lions (3-0) humbled the Orange in the first game between the old rivals in 18 years. The victory was the 375th for Penn State Coach Joe Paterno, keeping him tied with Florida State’s Bobby Bowden for the most among major college coaches. Fourth-year Syracuse Coach Greg Robinson, his job on the line, had his record drop to 7-31. The schools met in every season except one from 1922 to 1990, but the series ended when the Big East was formed and Penn State joined the Big Ten.

at Connecticut 45, Virginia 10: Donald Brown ran for 206 yards and three scores and the Huskies had touchdowns on their first four drives at East Hartford. Brown, who carried the ball 20 times, came into the game as the nation’s second-leading rusher, averaging 180 yards. The Huskies (3-0) scored on first-half drives of 70, 77, 86 and 75 yards, keeping the ball for almost 20 minutes in building a 28-0 lead. They racked up 506 yards of offense, including 382 on the ground. Virginia (1-2), which lost to USC, 52-7, in its opener, had 219 total yards.
