The driver of a large sport utility vehicle was arrested after allegedly running down three men at a San Jose park, killing one and injuring the other two, police said.

Homicide investigators are trying to determine if the driver of the white Chevrolet Suburban struck the victims intentionally Sunday morning. If so, the case could be handled as a murder, said San Jose police spokesman Enrique Garcia.

If detectives determine the accident was not intentional, the driver would probably be charged with vehicular manslaughter, Garcia said.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The others were hospitalized, one in stable condition and the other in critical condition, Garcia said.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the driver.

According to witnesses, the victims were hit while walking down a sidewalk along Hillview Park on the city’s east side of the city. Police said the driver fled after running down the victims and was arrested about an hour later.

Homicide detectives Sunday afternoon were interviewing possible witnesses, Garcia said.
