A woman was killed Sunday and a man was critically injured when the vehicle in which they were riding collided with a La Habra Police patrol car on the way -- with lights flashing and siren on -- to assist other officers, police said.

The man and the police officer who was driving the patrol car were taken to hospitals. The man was listed in critical condition and the officer in stable condition. The woman died at the scene of the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Euclid Street and La Habra Boulevard.

The episode began shortly before 5 p.m., when La Habra police officers attempted to serve a warrant on a parolee on Capella Street. When the officers arrived, they saw the parolee flee in a vehicle and followed him.

During the pursuit, the parolee abandoned his vehicle and began running, with officers following on foot.

Believing the parolee to be armed and dangerous, La Habra police spokeswoman Cindy Knapp said, they put out an “officer needs assistance” call.

That prompted the other patrol car to turn on its lights and siren and head to their assistance until the collision brought it to a halt.

La Habra police have not released the names of anyone involved in the accident and asked the California Highway Patrol to conduct an independent investigation.

Late Sunday night, the parolee had barricaded himself in an apartment building in the 900 block of Hillside Avenue, Knapp said.

SWAT officers from around Orange County were clearing the other apartment units before attempting to take him into custody.
