Steelers win rematch, 20-10

Isaac Redman, an undrafted rookie from Bowie State playing long after the starters for both Super Bowl teams left the field, scored twice in the fourth quarter and the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals, 20-10, in an exhibition in Pittsburgh.

Neither team scored a touchdown until rookie Joe Burnett intercepted a pass by third-teamer Brian St. Pierre, a former Steelers backup, and returned it to Arizona’s three-yard line to end the third quarter. Redman scored on the next play, and scored on a five-yard run about seven minutes later to end an 80-yard drive led by No. 3 quarterback Dennis Dixon.

Ben Roethlisberger and Kurt Warner each played two series -- make that 1 1/2 for Warner -- and neither produced a point. Warner completed six of 10 passes for 53 yards for Arizona, and Roethlisberger completed four of six for 33 yards for Pittsburgh.

New England 27, at Philadelphia 25 -- Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes for the Patriots in his first game since tearing ligaments in his left knee in Week 1 last year.

Brady ran well in the pocket and showed no lingering effects of his surgically repaired left knee. He threw two touchdown passes to tight end Chris Baker, one in the first quarter and another in the second.

Brady completed 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards with one interception.

at Oakland 31, Dallas 10 -- Tony Romo threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to favorite target Jason Witten to cap a brief but successful night before the Raiders rallied.

Bruce Gradkowski engineered three touchdown drives against mostly backups on Dallas’ defense, throwing a three-yard touchdown pass to Tony Stewart in the second quarter. Louis Rankin and Gary Russell added short touchdown runs in the third quarter, long after Romo’s night was done.

Romo played only two drives, going three-and-out on the first.

at Baltimore 23, Washington 0: Joe Flacco led the Ravens to field goals on his only two series, and Troy Smith threw a touchdown pass in the victory.

During the off-season, the Ravens feared their lack of depth at wide receiver might be an issue. But 15 players caught passes for Baltimore, eight of them wideouts. Justin Harper led the charge with four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Flacco completed nine of 15 passes for 103 yards, and Smith completed 14 of 30 attempts for 200 yards, including a beat-the-clock 19-yard score to Harper with five seconds left in the first half.

Elsewhere

Terrell Owens will miss the Buffalo Bills’ exhibition game against the Chicago Bears this weekend because of a sprained toe that has prevented him from practicing all week.

Coach Dick Jauron ruled Owens out of Saturday’s game after practice Thursday night, saying the toe is healing, but the team doesn’t want to take any chances with the receiver aggravating the injury.

Though Jauron didn’t have a timetable for when Owens could resume practicing, Owens tweeted earlier in the day that he expects to return to the field as soon as Monday. He added that fans don’t need to worry about his injury.

Shaun Hill will start at quarterback in the San Francisco 49ers’ exhibition opener tonight against the Denver Broncos.
