at New York 4, Seattle 2: Alex Rodriguez hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning, Andy Pettitte pitched seven strong innings and the Yankees won their seventh in a row. Ken Griffey Jr. hit home run No. 621 for the Mariners.

at Toronto 5, Tampa Bay 0: Ricky Romero pitched four-hit ball over eight innings, Rod Barajas, Adam Lind and Scott Rolen homered and the Blue Jays ended the Rays’ seven-game winning streak. Romero (6-3) lowered his ERA to 2.85.

Minnesota 5, at Kansas City 1: Joe Mauer went three for three, raising his average to .392 in the Twins’ victory. Mauer’s average would lead the major leagues, but his 240 plate appearances are eight shy of the 3.1 a game he needs to qualify.

at Oakland 5, Detroit 1: Jason Giambi and Jack Cust broke out of funks with two-run homers. Giambi’s drive in the sixth off Justin Verlander was home run No. 407, tying him with Duke Snider for 43rd place. He had been in a two-for-28 slump. Cust was four for 24 with 13 strikeouts before connecting in the fourth for his 14th homer.

Chicago 6, at Cleveland 2: Jose Contreras, 1-6 in his previous 10 road starts, pitched eight superb innings and the White Sox won their fifth in a row. The Indians have lost 13 of 15.

at Texas 9, Rangers 7: Hank Blalock’s homer won it after the Angels squandered chances on the bases.
