A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized in stable condition with a shoulder wound after being shot Sunday night in Palmdale, officials said.

The deputy returned fire but did not not hit the gunman. A suspect was arrested about 40 minutes after the 8:03 p.m. shooting, officials said. The Sheriff’s Department did not release the names of the suspect or the deputy, who is in his 20s.

“It appears that the deputy is going to be OK, that it’s not life threatening,” said department spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Officials said the gunman was walking in the 1000 block of Avenue Q4 when the deputy stopped him for questioning. The man opened fire, jumped in his car and drove off, officials said.

After a pursuit, the suspect was apprehended while climbing out of the back window of a home in the 2000 block of Cape Cod Lane.

The deputy was flown to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
