Wet Canadian Open is won by Green

Nathan Green won the Canadian Open at Oakville for his first PGA Tour victory, beating Retief Goosen with a par on the second hole of a playoff in the rain-delayed tournament.

After Green missed a 12-foot birdie attempt on the par-four 17th, Goosen’s eight-foot par try slid right, ending the first Monday finish in the national championship since 1988.

“It’s a huge surprise to finally win,” said Green, the 34-year-old former Canadian Tour player from Toronto -- Toronto, Australia, that is. “This is where I started my pro career. I love coming up here. The people are great.”

In sunny conditions, Green completed a third-round 69 with an eagle on No. 18 and shot a 68 in the fourth round at saturated Glen Abbey. Goosen three-putted the 18th for par in his morning 67, then eagled the closing hole in the afternoon for a 69.

Goosen had a putt to win on No. 18 on the first extra hole but missed a six-foot birdie try after leaving his bunker shot above the hole. Green saved par after his second shot bounced off a cart path, landing near the scoring trailer above the green.

Goosen had his fourth straight top-six finish worldwide.

“I’m very happy with the way I’m playing,” Goosen said. “I’ve had chances to win in the last four tournaments I’ve played in. I’ve just got to keep going, and hopefully, it’s going to come my way.”

Anthony Kim and Jason Dufner tied for third, four strokes back.

D.A. says Burress will go to prison

Manhattan’s district attorney says he wants former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress to serve time in prison, the New York Post reported.

Robert Morgenthau told the newspaper that Burress, who accidentally shot himself with an unlicensed gun in November, was willing to agree to spend a year in jail, but prosecutors insisted on two.

“We’ve always taken the position that he’s going to have to go to jail, whether by trial or by plea,” Morgenthau told the Post.

Burress shot himself in the thigh at a nightclub early on the morning of Nov. 29. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison. Burress has pleaded not guilty and is free on $100,000 bail. The Giants released Burress in April.

Gooden agrees to Mavericks deal

A source close to the negotiations told the Associated Press that the Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement with free agent Drew Gooden.

The source, who did not wish to be identified because a contract hasn’t been signed, said Monday that the deal is “verbally done.”

Gooden said on his Twitter page that he had three deciding factors in his decision to join the Mavericks: winning, playing time and money. He wrote: “Dallas is the team!”

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban did not return an e-mail seeking confirmation of the deal but did post “Welcome Drew” on his Twitter page.

Gooden, 27, played in 19 games for the San Antonio Spurs last season, averaging 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 Gooden averages 12 points and 7.9 rebounds and will help a frontcourt that lost Brandon Bass to free agency.

The Minnesota Timberwolves picked up point guard Chucky Atkins from Oklahoma City in exchange for veteran center Etan Thomas and two second-round draft picks next year. Minnesota also received Oklahoma City guard Damien Wilkins in the deal.

The Charlotte Bobcats are finalizing a trade that would send Emeka Okafor to the New Orleans Hornets for Tyson Chandler, two people familiar with the deal said.

The swap of 26-year-old centers wasn’t expected to be completed until today.

Massa is awake and talking

Formula One driver Felipe Massa was awake and talking to family members in Budapest, Hungary, making significant improvement after his high-speed crash Saturday.

Lajos Zsiros, the chief surgeon at AEK hospital, said Massa is now breathing unassisted and moving his limbs. In addition, a drain from his skull wound was removed.

Allstate Corp. said it is ending its sponsorship of NASCAR’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard after five years as the lead sponsor of the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Speedway spokesman Ron Green said the Brickyard was a solid event for 11 years before Allstate signed on as sponsor, and the speedway is not aggressively looking for a new race sponsor.

Former Falcon Bryan, 47

Rick Bryan, an All-American defensive end at Oklahoma who played his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons, has died at Coweta, Okla. He was 47.

Bryan holds the Sooners’ record for tackles by a lineman with 365 and played for Atlanta from 1984 to 1993.
