STATE TRACK AND FIELD MEET

at Clovis Buchanan High, 3 p.m.

Randall Carroll will try to retain his title as California’s fastest high school sprinter when qualifying heats begin this afternoon in the 100 and 200 meters. The Los Angeles Cathedral senior will face challenges from Fountain Valley’s Kyle Middlebrooks and Crenshaw’s DeAnthony Thomas in the 100 and Los Angeles Santee’s Tevin Carter and Tustin’s Ameer Webb in the 200. Riverside La Sierra’s Reggie Wyatt will try to break the national record of 35.28 seconds in the 300 hurdles, set in 2007 by Jeshua Anderson of Woodland Hills Taft. Claremont’s Kori Carter is the favorite in the girls’ 100 hurdles. Finals in all events are Saturday.

SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

at Blair Field, Long Beach

The final game of today’s tripleheader, for the Division V title, pits Woodcrest Christian (23-5), the team that upset two-time defending champion San Jacinto in a semifinal, against Pasadena Maranatha (25-5), which lost to San Jacinto in last year’s final. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

Other games: Division VII -- Camarillo Cornerstone Christian (21-0) vs. Carpinteria Cate (19-1), 1:30 p.m. Division VI -- Cypress Oxford Academy (21-5) vs. Rosamond (20-4), 4:30 p.m.

SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

at Barber Park, Irvine

The final game of today’s tripleheader features the top-seeded teams in Division II. No. 1 Vista Murrieta (27-4) will be seeking its first section championship against Etiwanda (28-2) in a game scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Expect a pitchers’ duel. Both Tatum Edwards of Vista Murrieta and Natalee Pulver of Etiwanda have three shutouts in four playoff games.

Other games: Division VII -- Hesperia Christian (24-1) vs. Rosamond (21-7), 2 p.m. Division IV -- North Torrance (21-13) vs. El Segundo (29-3), 4:15 p.m.
