Hornbuckle powers Pepperdine, 93-85

Mike Hornbuckle scored 25 points, including five three-point baskets, to lead sixth-seeded Pepperdine to a 93-85 victory over seventh-seeded San Francisco in the first round of the West Coast Conference tournament Friday night at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Hornbuckle was eight for 11 from the field for the Waves, who play third-seeded Portland in the second round tonight.

The Waves (9-22), who withstood 16 lead changes and 11 ties, took the lead for good on a Hornbuckle three-pointer that made it 73-72 with 5:42 left.

Pepperdine built a six-point lead in the first half and led 48-47 at halftime.

Keion Bell had 19 points and seven rebounds for Pepperdine, and Mychel Thompson had 12 points and five rebounds.

Dior Lowhorn had a career-high 32 points for San Francisco (11-19).

San Diego 62, Loyola Marymount 56 -- Gyno Pomare scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Toreros (16-15) over the eighth-seeded Lions (3-28) in a first-round game.

Roberto Mafra scored a career-high 14 points and had six rebounds for San Diego, which will play fourth-seeded Santa Clara in the second round tonight.

Loyola Marymount was outrebounded, 38-16, as it set a school record for losses in a season. The previous high was 26 in 1999-2000.

Kevin Young scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half to lead the Lions to a 31-28 halftime lead. The Toreros took the lead for good at 40-38 when Chris Lewis made a three-pointer with 14:11 left, sparking a 14-3 run.

Jarred DuBois had 18 points for the Lions, who were 13 for 28 from the free-throw line.
