Why it matters: UCLA-bound sprinter Randall Carroll of Los Angeles Cathedral, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, will make his season big-meet debut. He ran a 10.12 hand-timed 100 two weeks ago in a dual meet. Also running is Los Angeles Loyola sophomore Elias Gedyon, who will test himself in the 400. The last event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Top contributors: Steven Irvin, Loyola, had 13 kills. Michael Dye, Loyola, had 12 kills and five blocks. Robert Feathers, Loyola, had nine kills.

The scoop: A crowd close to 3,000 filled Redondo’s gym to watch these two volleyball rivals that have combined to win 15 section titles. The 6-foot-8 Feathers and the 6-5 Dye dominated in the middle to help the Cubs pull off the upset. “They were amazing,” Loyola setter Matt Mirick said. “They took over the match.”

Why it matters: Mira Costa was ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN RISE and Loyola was No. 4. They are expected to meet again for the Southern Section Division I championship.

Records: Loyola 14-2, Mira Costa 10-1.
