AROUND THE NATION : Michigan didn’t file forms on players

The University of Michigan on Monday released details of an internal audit that discovered Rich Rodriguez’s team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season -- his first -- and the off-season last spring.

The NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues. The NCAA sent the school’s president a notice of inquiry last month, saying it plans to complete its investigation by Dec. 31.

“I don’t know what the NCAA is going to find,” Athletic Director Bill Martin told the Associated Press before the audit was released. “I do know this is not academic fraud or gambling.

“I’m not involved with the investigation. It’s being handled by our general counsel. We’re the ones who picked up the phone to call the NCAA about this.”

The audit was completed months ago, but the details surfaced during Ohio State week because they are part of the agenda for Thursday’s board of regents meeting.

The university said Rodriguez would not make a statement about the audit, saying the coach and school officials are limited in what they can say because of the ongoing investigation.

Players dismissed

Two of three Tennessee freshmen charged last week in an attempted armed robbery have been dismissed from the team.

Coach Lane Kiffin said wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson and defensive back Mike Edwards permanently were dismissed from the team, and safety Janzen Jackson will continue to be barred from team activities while Kiffin awaits more information.

All three players were out on bond.

California tailback Jahvid Best will not play against Stanford this week as he recovers from a concussion. . . . Nevada Las Vegas fired Coach Mike Sanford after five losing seasons, a 15-43 record and no bowl appearances. . . . Boise State tight end Richie Brockel is expected to sit out the rest of the season because of a foot injury suffered against Idaho on Saturday. . . . Dick Tomey announced he will retire from coaching after San Jose State’s game Dec. 5.
