Campbell, Piercy share Las Vegas lead

Chad Campbell made a double bogey on the par-five 16th, then birdied the 18th for a four-under-par 67 and a share of the third-round lead with Scott Piercy on Saturday in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

Piercy -- a Las Vegas native whose wife, Sara, delivered son Jett on Thursday night -- had a 65 to match Campbell, a former Nevada Las Vegas player, at 17-under 196 at TPC Summerlin.

Dan Forsman remained in position for his second Champions Tour victory of the year, shooting a one-under 71 to take a one-stroke lead in the Administaff Small Business Classic in the Woodlands, Texas.

Forsman had a nine-under 135 total on the Woodlands Country Club’s Tournament Course.

Barrichello wins pole in Sao Paulo

Rubens Barrichello won the pole position for his hometown Brazilian Grand Prix, emerging from chaotic, rain-lashed qualifying as the only Formula One contender in the top 10 on the grid in Sao Paulo.

Ryan Tuerck of Derry, N.H., beat Tyler McQuarrie of Walnut Creek, Calif., in the Formula Drift season finale in front of a sold-out crowd at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale.

Nadal, Davydenko to meet in final

Rafael Nadal advanced to the Shanghai Masters final after Feliciano Lopez became the ninth player to retire from the tournament.

The unseeded Lopez said he woke up with a right foot infection, and then twisted his right ankle on the last point of the first set. He was trailing, 6-1, 3-0, when he retired.

The top-seeded Nadal will play in today’s final against sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko, who outlasted second-seeded Novak Djokovic, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1).

Samantha Stosur won the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka earlier today for her first WTA singles title, beating Francesca Schiavone, 7-5, 6-1. Stosur, seeded third and ranked 15th in the world, broke the fourth-seeded Schiavone’s serve to go up 3-1 in the second set and dominated the rest of the way to close out the match in 1 hour 8 minutes.

No. 3 Yanina Wickmayer beat top-seeded Flavia Pennetta, 7-6 (5), 6-3, and Petra Kvitova upset second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-2, in the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria.

China’s Yan earns gold in still rings

Yan Mingyong gave China its third gold medal at the world gymnastics championships in London, winning the title on still rings. Yan scored 15.675, edging the ageless Jordan Jovtchev by just 0.10. Oleksandr Vorobiov, the Olympic bronze medalist, was third.

American Kayla Williams won the women’s vault title and Marian Dragulescu of Romania won the men’s floor.

Froch keeps super middleweight title

Carl Froch retained his WBC super middleweight title with a split-decision victory over Andre Dirrell in the second fight of the Super Six World Boxing Classic super middleweight tournament in Nottingham, England.

World champion Kim Yu-na of South Korea captured the Trophee Bompard figure skating event, winning the free skate with a flawless performance to finish ahead of Japanese skaters Mao Asada and Yukari Nakano. After blowing the field away in Friday’s short program, Kim did it again to total 210.03 points after receiving 133.95 in the free skate.

The FBI says it investigated reported threats to former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards after he allegedly punched a man outside a downtown nightclub in an Oct. 5 incident.
